After waiting 13 years to contend for a world title, WBC Heavyweight Champion Oleg Maskaev is in no hurry to lose his belt and the 37 year old Russian took no chances in selecting Japan based Ugandan Peter Okhello as his most recent opponent.
The two squared off at the Olympiysky Sports Arena in Moscow last night as Maskaev put his title at risk for the first time. Predictably, "The Big O" had little trouble with the tall African, controlling nearly ever second of the twelve round affair with the jab, right hand and occasional left hook.
The plodding Okhello never was able to get an effective offense going and was sent to the canvas by a Maskaev uppercut in the tenth but managed to finish the fight on his feet.
Maskaev took a wide points decision 1118-109 and 120-107 (twice) to run his record to
34-5 (26) while Okhello drops to 18-5 (16).
