Last night at York Hall in London, England, middleweights Howard "The Battersea Bomber" Eastman and Richard "The Secret" Williams went at it for an eventful twelve rounds for the vacant British title and with less than a minute remaining in the bout, Eastman knocked out Williams with a crisp right hand that "The Secret" never saw coming.
At 36 and 35 years of age respectively, both Eastman and Williams were battling Father Time as well as each as each knew a loss here could well mean the end of the line.
While former IBO/Commonwealth/WBF Light Middle champ Williams started the bout well, it was the greater experience of ex-European/Commonwealth/British champ Eastman, who had also contested for two world titles, that proved to be the difference.
"The Battersea Bomber" was content to allow his rival to carry the action, conserving energy and picking his spots well enough to steal most of the rounds, despite the aggression of Williams. That come forward approach of the younger man proved to be his undoing as it was his exhaustion as much as Eastman's right hand that ended matters at 2:06 of the twelfth round.
Howard Eastman, 41-4 (35), becomes British Middleweight Champion for the third time, while Richard Williams drops to 21-4-1 (17).
