“La Pantera” Bites Again: Farias Beats Svensson

Erica Anabella Farias of Argentina is the old and new WBC Female Super Lightweight Champion. “La Pantera” prevailed in the lion’s den when she traveled to Denmark to beat interim champion Klara Svensson of Sweden by unanimous decision.

In an action-packed fight, Farias put a lot of pressure on her opponent and dropped the “Swedish Princess” with a hard right hook in round five.

After ten hard fought rounds judge Esa Lehtosaari of Finland scored the bout 98-92, Fabian Guggenheim of Switzerland had it 96-93 and David John Irving of Ireland saw it 96-94, all in favor of the 30-year-old champion.

It was Farias’ 22nd win in her 23rd pro fight while Svensson suffered her first loss after 15 straight wins.

Christina McMahon is the fighting pride of Ireland. The 40-year-old “Lightning” outworked local hero Catherine Phiri on Saturday night in front of 3,000 enthusiastic fans in Lusaka, Zambia, to win the WBC Female Interim Bantamweight Championship.

In a close fight, McMahon did enough to upset former Silver champion Phiri and earn a well deserved majority decision win.

One of the judges scored the bout even at 95-95 while two judges gave the nod to McMahon, 97-94 and 96-95. The Irish veteran moved to 7-0 and is now in line for a unification bout with World Champion Yazmin Rivas.

Phiri suffered her first loss in her 11th pro bout but will surely recover from this setback and start another run for the world title soon.
