Clear Path For WBA Challenge Or Mundine Rematch
IBF Pan Pacific Light Heavyweight Champion Danny Green crushed durable PABA titlist Paul Murdoch in two rounds last night in front of 3,000 fans at the State Netball and Hockey Centre in Melbourne, Australia.
Win the thrilling victory, the hammer fisted Green, 23-3 (21), now has a clear path to challenge the winner of February's WBA title contest between reigning champion Silvio Branco and number one contender Stipe Drews in Germany.
But "The Green Machine" also has a mind to rematch domestic arch rival Anthony Mundine, who defeated Green by points decision last May in a WBA Super Middleweight title eliminator. Mundine must first get past another of his bitter rivals, Sam Soliman, when the two square off in March for the vacant WBA 168 lb title in Sydney.
Perth based Green had one of his better career showings against Murdoch, 26-7-1 (16), who had gone ten rounds with perhaps the light heavyweight division's must under-rated champion, WBO kingpin Zsolt Erdei, less than a year ago.
Showing top form, Green decked Murdoch in the first round with a stinging double jab that caught the longstanding PABA titlist completely by surprise. Murdoch beat the count but the Geelong puncher was
finished just 65 seconds into the second round when Green connected with a full blooded left hook that hurtled Murdoch to the canvas.
