Impact Boxing: Danny Johnston to Fight Veteran Howard Clarke

By Boxing Press February 20th, 2007 All Press Releases

Cobridge middleweight boxer Danny Johnston will face Howard Clarke the veteran of 106 professional fights when he turns out at Stoke’s Kings Hall on Saturday. Still ranked as high as 27 in the super-middleweight division, Clarke is the only man to have beaten the highly rated Ross Minter (son of former WBA and WBC World middleweight champion Alan Minter).

Clarke also recently went the distance with the UK’s number 18 ranked middleweight Matthew Thirlwall and has emerged unscathed from tussles with most of the leading contenders in and around the British middleweight division. Clarke’s CV also boasts a challenge for the WBO Intercontinental title in 2000.

For Johnston, who has now won three and lost two of his five professional bouts, the seasoned Clarke will represent his sternest test to date. Having only recently recovered from an injury that adversely affected his training schedule Johnston will need to be sharp and focused on the night if he is to prevail against the significantly more experienced Warley man.

“Howard Clarke has been a pro for a long time and knows all the tricks of the trade by now,” said Johnston. “He’s also been the distance with a lot of guys who are much higher up the ranks than I am so I am expecting a very tough fight.”

“Having said that, it’s just the sort of fight that I need at this stage of my career; I can only learn a lot by fighting someone with Howard’s experience and hopefully, beating him will help to move me up the rankings.”

Liverpool’s Gary Davis will now face a changed opponent. Scheduled to meet Jamil Hussain who has now withdrawn, Davis will now step in against Huddersfield based Syrian Abdul Mougharbel.

Tickets for the Impact Boxing promoted event are still available by calling: 0845 156 7168 or via the website: www.impactboxing.com
