Kevin “Kingpin” Johnson: “I’m More Than Ready To Step In For Briggs”
In a recent press release heavyweight Sultan Ibragimov, who claims he can’t find a suitable opponent to replace the WBO belt holder Shannon Briggs, when he pulled out of their March 10th card due to pneumonia, obviously ignored the offer of Kevin “Kingpin” Johnson to step in as a worthy replacement.
Ibragimov claims that he was searching for an opponent and fighters like Ray Mercer, Dominick Guinn, Taurus Sykes, and Lou Savarese turned down the fight. So when offered Johnson as a replacement why didn’t he accept?
“I read with interest the problem Team Ibragimov is having getting an opponent for his March 10th date at MSG” said Johnson. “I’d like to let them know that I’m more than ready to step in for Briggs. I’m currently in training, so all you’ve got to do is call my promoter Joe DeGuardia and we can rumble”
In only his 4th professional bout Johnson received a controversial draw against Timor Ibragimov. “I whipped his brother Timor, and now I’m ready to do the same to Sultan”. Many media members who saw the fight believed Johnson deserved the win. Timor’s team refused to have a rematch. Ever since then Johnson’s wanted “a piece of Sultan”. “We made the call and offered them the fight. So far my phone isn’t ringing” stated Star Boxing CEO Joe DeGuardia.
At 6’ 5”, 240-pounds of solid muscle the 27yr old Johnson has a current of 13-0-1, 5KO’. His opponents have included respectable fringe contenders in Robert Wiggins and Robert Hawkins. Boxing cognoscenti believe Johnson has the skills to become the future of the heavyweight division and a crack at Sultan would provide much needed clarity for the division.
