The Rugby Grounds in Townsville, Queensland, Australia saw Les Sherrington annex the vacant domestic super middle title when his bout with Sonni Michael Angelo was stopped in the ninth round on cuts.
Sherrington, 13-4 (7), a southpaw who previously held the title in 2005, was in the process of building upon his lead over Bolivia born, Gold Coast based Angelo, 12-5 (4), when an accidental clash of heads caused injuries that forced a stoppage of the contest at 2:11 of the ninth round.
24 year old Gold Coast native Sherrington was declared the winner, and new Super Middleweight Champion of Australia, via scores of 79-72, 79-73, 78-73.
A rematch with Jamie Pittman could be in the works for the new champion, who lost to Pittman by fourth round KO last year.
