B.J. “El Peligroso” Flores fighting way into top 15 boxing ratings

By Boxing Press March 8th, 2007 All Press Releases

Unbeaten cruiserweight B.J. "El Peligroso" Flores has positioned himself to crack the top 15 ratings in boxing's major organizations, primarily based on his last four performances against quality opponents, registering a pair of first-round TKOs and two unanimous 12-round decision victories.

Flores (19-0-1, 12 KOs), fighting out of Phoenix and promoted by Silverhawk Boxing, easily won a 12-round unanimous decision (117-111, 177-111, 116-112) on March 2 against IBA super cruiserweight champion "Punchin" Pat Nwamu (12-1) in Boise, Idaho.

"It was a difficult fight because he didn't want to engage," Flores explained his fight against Nwamu. "He got on his bicycle and moved around a lot. He's very athletic but didn't want to fight. The fans booed. I was the busier guy; he just flicked his jab. I was the aggressor the entire fight."

Prior to beating Nwamu, Flores won a unanimous 12-round decision (116-112, 116-111, 116-111) against knockout artist Chris Thomas (16-6-2) for the NBA super cruiserweight and WBF super cruiserweight belts; stopped Gary Dydell (8-2) and Ali Supreme (15-6) in the opening rounds of their bouts.

"In my last two fights I beat No. 7 NABF rated Nwamu, one of the top guys in the U.S. who hadn't lost in six years, and big punching Chris Thomas," WBC rated No. 24 Flores said. "I hope those fights will put me in the top 15. I'm 19-0 now. I proved I can go 12 rounds, gained a lot of experience, and didn't tire.

"Now, I want to match my skills against top 15 fighters. I know I have power at cruiserweight and I've showed that as well as the ability to go the distance. I was just in the main event in another guy's hometown (Cleveland Corder's farewell fight in Boise). I'm one of the top-rated cruiserweights in the United States and I can be a real contender."

As an amateur, Flores captured the prestigious U.S. National Championships twice (2001-2002) in the heavyweight division, where he fought his first 15 pro fights before moving to cruiserweight.
