Esham Pickering Regains British Super Bantam Title With Win Over Marc Callaghan
Last night in front of a thrilled hometown audience at the Showground in Norwich, England, British Lightweight Champion Jon “Jono” Thaxton retained his belt with a shattering seventh round stoppage of Stoke man Scott Lawton.
The taller Lawton used his reach advantage to keep the stocky southpaw champion at the end of the jab through the early rounds but the Midlands man simply didn’t have the firepower to keep Thaxton off him during the grinding middle rounds.
Once Lawton began to tire, Thaxton was able to close distance and pepper his opponent with the kind of short hooks that are his stock in trade and that gave Ricky Hatton all he could handle in 2000.
The champion broke down Lawton’s defenses completely in the seventh, cutting the nose of the challenger before stopping him with a searing right hook at 2:40 of the round.
Thaxton climbs to 32-7 (17) and retains his British title for the first time. The big hearted but outgunned Lawton falls to 20-3-1 (4).
Also on the card, the experience of former European, Commonwealth and British Super Feather Champion Esham Pickering was on full display as the Newark stylist regained the vacant domestic title with a spot on performance against English beltholder Marc Callaghan.
The 30 year old “Brown Sugar” made Callaghan miss all night and beat the Barking brawler to the punch repeatedly, taking every single round in a dominant points victory.
Pickering, 31-5 (11), will be looking again to challenge for a world title after losing a WBO title bid early in his career. Callaghan drops to 19-11-1 (3).
