Manny Pacquaio Wants Fight Against Vasyl Lomachenko

The rumors that a super clash was brewing in the world of Boxing started after Vasyl Lomachenko stopped the prodigious Cuban fighter Guillermo Rigondeaux in December to retain the WBO super featherweight title.

Since then, Manny “Pacman” Paquiao has gone on record saying that he wants to keep on boxing and that he is in talks with Lomachenko’s people for a fight against the Ukrainian this year.

According to published media reports, Paquiao confirmed that negotiations between the two parties are now underway, but they are still considering the weight at which the bout will take place

Recently, Pacquiao has been fighting as a welterweight and Lomachenko as a super featherweight, a 17 pound difference, which could make complicate the feasibility of this potential clash.

Bob Arum, who promotes Pacquiao, was quoted in published media reports that the fight will only happen at the end of the year, if at all, since Lomachenko does not want to jump at least two weight classes. Instead, Lomachenko will most likely fight at lightweight first and then determine if it makes sense for him to move further up in weight.

Pacquiao vs. Lomachenko, by all accounts, would take place at 140 pounds according to Arum and that’s one of the reasons it’s unlikely to take place. The other is that Lomachenko has stated in the past that he is not interested in taking on a fighter, Pacquiao, who is past his prime.

All indications are that Lomachenko’s camp are not taking these negotiations seriously since they are not outspoken about-facing Pacquiao at this point.

The 29 year-old Lomachenko is a Ukraine born southpaw who won gold medals at the 2008 and 2012 Olympic games. In his short professional career, he has fought 11 times and has amassed a record of 10 wins by knockout with 1 loss.

Pacquiao, at 39 years of, is in the twilight of his boxing career and most recently lost his WBO welterweight belt to Jeff Horn by way of a controversial decision. Pacquiao has been very public that he wants to fight again, whether it’s against Lomacheno or Amir Khan, as long as the fight takes place in April.

Since Pacquiao is a congressman in the Philippines, he can only train full-time and fight in April, when the country’s legislation is on vacation.
