British Lightweight champion Jon Thaxton is looking forward to bigger things after making the first defence of his domestic title and signing a long-term deal with promoter Mick Hennessy.
Thaxton, 32, thrilled his home fans at the Norfolk Showground in Norwich by stopping Stoke challenger Scott Lawton in the seventh round on Friday in outstanding fashion.
Thaxton expects the promotional contract with Hennessy Sports will move his career on to the next level and is eyeing up a European Title tilt.
“It’s really exciting news for me,” said Thaxton, after stopping Lawton. “Now I'm with Mick Hennessy anything could happen. I've said to him you line up, I'll knock them down. The Sky is the limit.”
Hennessy is equally as confident in his man's ability to extend his rule beyond Britain at lightweight.
“I consider Jon to be the best lightweight in Europe at the moment,” he said. “Following his impressive win over Lawton we will be looking to get him a European title fight or a high profile International fight before the end of the year to get him on the world scene.
“I'm delighted to be working with Jon. He's a true professional and always gives 100 per cent. Now that he is at the right weight, I consider him to be a real force in his division.
“There are some potentially exciting fights out there for Jon. He is a star in Norwich and hopefully we can take a really big fight there. Judging by the response we had for the Lawton fight it would be quite an occasion.”
