Connecticut heavyweight prospect, Tony Grano, the 2005 United States Amateur Heavyweight Champion, returns to the ring Friday night at the Foxwoods Resort & Casino in Connecticut. Grano (7-0-1, 6 KO) risk his undefeated record, when he takes on Missouri's John Turlington in a six-round undercard attraction. The bout will be Grano's second in a one-month span, having earned a unanimous decision victory over Boston's Tyrone Smith on February 23rd at Mohegan Sun.
In Turlington (5-10-1, 4 KO), Grano will face his most experienced opponent to date, and one with a rather deceptive record, as well. In the ten fights in which Turlington has been defeated, the combined record of his opponents was an impressive 97 wins, 6 losses, and 3 draws, to include a decision loss to current super-middleweight contender Allen Green. Bill Grano, Tony's father and manager, has already forewarned his son about not taking Turlington lighty. "I told Tony that he can't underestimate Turlington based on his record, rather he has to take a look at who he's been up against. Turlington has fought some very stiff opposition in his career, and Tony is very much aware of that, and he'll be ready."
ESPN2's Friday Night Fights will broadcast the Star Boxing event live, with Delvin Rodriguez and Jesse Feliciano squaring off in the main event and Said Ouali and Irving Garcia set to do battle in the evening's co-feature. The Grano - Turlington bout could receive air time if there is an early stoppage in either of the aforementioned bouts.
The Grano camp has also advised that if all goes well on Friday night, Tony is slated to be right back in action at Mohegan Sun on May 4, with those fights to be televised on the New England Sports Network.
