Lightweight Rita Figueroa Injured, Off Mia St. John Boxing Card

By Boxing Press April 16th, 2007 All Press Releases

Undefeated Chicago lightweight Rita Figueroa has suffered a rotator cuff injury and will be unable to face Mia St. John this Friday night, April 20 in Merrillville, Indiana as scheduled, it was announced today by Dominic Pesoli, President of 8 Count Productions.

Mia St. John will still be fighting on the One in a Million, Inc. "Fists Of Fury" event. For more information, please call 219-769-6600 or visit their website at www.oneinamil.com

Since turning professional two and half year ago, Figueroa, 9-0 (3KO’s) has become a Chicago fan favorite with her tremendous skills and attitude of a warrior in the ring.

In her last bout Figueroa battled fellow undefeated prospect Mary McGee on November 16, 2006 for four rounds before the fight was stopped due to an accidental head butt and ruled a no contest.

Speaking on Sunday morning about the injury, “La Guera” stated, “I apologize to everyone that was looking forward to the fight, but I can assure you, no one is more disappointed than I am. I was training hard, and looking forward to the fight with Mia St. John. I am hoping that we can make the fight happen once the injury is healed.

With any fight, you need to be as close to 100% as possible, and without the proper use of my left arm, there was just no way to get in there and give the fans the kind of fight they expect from me. I have to believe that everything happens for a reason, and there will be opportunities in the future.”

The classy Figueroa also said, “I want to thank everyone for their continued support they’ve shown and once healed, I will be back in the ring giving my best. I’m lucky to have people around me that always have my best interests in mind such as Sam, Angela, Greg, Rocky and my promoter Dominic.”

Said Pesoli, “I know how important this fight was for Rita and hopefully it can be rescheduled when the injury is healed. I wish her all the best with her recovery and along with her many fans and friends in Chicago look forward to seeing her in the ring.”
