David Haye: Fresh Blood On The Heavyweight Boxing Scene

By Boxing Press April 24th, 2007 All Press Releases

by Simon Jackson

"A breath of fresh air in the form of David Haye, the European cruiserweight champion, is soon to envelop the world heavyweight scene and his inclusion will benefit the division," said promoter Frank Maloney.

“David Haye is fresh blood in the heavyweight division, he has a gunslinger’s attitude and that is what makes him so exciting to watch. Every time he steps into the ring you know you are going to see something special."

Haye, 18-1 (17 KOs), makes his initial appearance at heavyweight and is anticipating a thriller when he meets Tomasz Bonin, 37-1 (20 KOs), this Friday, April 27 at Wembley Arena in London.

“Any fight at heavyweight is dangerous,” Haye said. “It is a gamble. Look what happened to Audley Harrison against Michael Sprott. It is a gamble that I am happy to take. It is the element of the unknown that I enjoy. Punters will be on the edge of their seats for this one.

“My defence must be a lot better than at cruiserweight but I wouldn’t be surprised if I stop Bonin. The only way to find out how good I am is to test myself [in fights like these.]

“I am going to come in as light as possible. There is a small element of weight I need to lose for this. But I want to be just as light as possible as I don’t want to bulk up too much because of the cruiserweight fight with Mormeck."

Haye was recently named mandatory challenger to Jean Marc Mormeck, the WBC & WBA cruiserweight champion and Maloney confirmed this hugely anticipated clash “will be before the end of this year.”

“When I have beaten Mormeck I will see how my weight is and may defend it once but if it is not safe to take the weight off I will vacate it and continue at heavyweight. I wouldn’t be fazed by any of the British heavyweights but fighting many of them is unrealistic anyway as they are with Sports Network.

“I will start with the European scene then the world scene. My ultimate goal is to be heavyweight champion.”

Frank Maloney Promotions presents “Heavyweight Hayemaker’ at Wembley Arena, Wembley, London, England on April 27, 2007. Tickets are priced at £100; £70 & £40 and are available by logging onto www.frankmaloney.com or by calling the Box Office at 0871 226 1508 or televised live on Sky TV.
