Last night at the Civic Centre in Motherwell, Scotland, local hero and British Welterweight Champion Kevin Anderson held onto his belt against the crafty former Commonwealth Light Welter titlist Eamonn Magee on a Barry Hearn promotion.
It was a difficult night for the reigning champion, as Anderson was coming off a loss to Ali Nuumbembe for the Commonwealth welter belt just three months ago and Magee's long experience was in full flower during the twelve round contest.
The 24 year old Anderson pressed the action for most of the bout while his older Ulster opponent enjoyed some good success utilizing his trademark stinging southpaw counter style.
But during the eleventh round, Anderson struck paydirt with a full blooded right cross that put the 35 year old Magee on the canvas for the first time in his career.
Magee beat the count and weathered the follow up battering from his Scottish antagonist but the proud veteran couldn't fight fire with fire and by the time the bout was through, Anderson had taken a 119-110, 118-111 and 117-110 decision to retain the British title.
Anderson improves to 19-1 (11) while Magee falls to 27-6 (17).
