It was like 1999 all over again last night at the Events Center in Broomfield, Colorado as Stevie "Lil' But Bad" Johnston turned in a vintage performance to widely outpoint opponent Humberto Toledo and keep the IBA Lightweight belt.
The diminutive outclassed his Ecuadorian rival in every round, creating combinations off an accurate jab that was generally capped off with a bracing southpaw power left hand that had Toledo at a loss for answers.
Using the footwork that helped him to log seven defenses of the WBC Lightweight title over two reigns, Johnston, 41-4 (18), made Toledo, 31-4-2 (19), miss and pay on many occasions, bringing home a dominating 120-108, 119-109 and 118-110 victory.
The 34 year old native Colorado man looked spectacular against the limited Toldeo but it remains to be seen if Johnston can still pull off this type of performance against the type of opposition that he must face if he is to once again get an opportunity to fight for a major world title.
