On Friday night at the Orleans in Las Vegas, "Amazing" Layla McCarter banged out a hard fought six round decision over tough Texan Angelica Martinez at welterweight.
McCarter, 24-13-5 (5), was coming off a loss just a month ago in a rematch against Melissa Hernandez that saw the 28 year Las Vegan lose for the first time in seven bouts.
Martinez, 6-3-1 (1), came into the clash with McCarter on a high, having won her previous two bouts, most notably a split decision victory over former world champion Christy Martin last October.
Once the bout began at the Orleans, McCarter's edge in experience was apparent as she used superior footwork to best advantage.
Normally a lightweight, former GBU titlist McCarter doesn't have a lot of concussive power to her shots, just one KO victory in her last 18 fights, so she has to box her way through and beat opponent's to the punch.
With the towering Martinez, a career welterweight, holding a three inch height advantage, McCarter had to work to get inside but again, the experience showed as she slipped shots to get in and land solid shots to the body of her Dallas based opponent.
Martinez did have some success with the right hand, catching McCarter at times on the way in but the hard-nosed Vegas woman banged Martinez with perfect left hooks and short shots once she established position.
Both fighters finished on their feet and by the time the smoke cleared, "Amazing" Layla McCarter was declared the winner by unanimous decision.
McCarter should see action again as soon as June 9, where she is set to face New York super feather Dominga Olivo at the Sky Ute Casino in Colorado.
