By Boxing Press June 8th, 2007 All Press Releases

Showtime will pay tribute to the late, great Diego “ Chico ” Corrales with a three-fight marathon and a memorial feature on Saturday, June 9.

Beginning at 6 p.m. ET/PT, the network will re-air Corrales’ classic bouts against Joel Casamayor, Acelino Freitas and Jose Luis Castillo, respectively, on Showtime Too.

At 10 p.m. ET/PT, Showtime will unveil a special Corrales memorial tribute as part of the live Showtime Championship Boxing doubleheader featuring Antonio Tarver and Chad Dawson.

Showtime Too will re-air Casamayor vs. Corrales II, Freitas vs. Corrales, and Castillo vs. Corrales I at the following times:

Casamayor vs. Corrales II
: 6 p.m. ET/PT
Freitas vs. Corrales: 7 p.m. ET/PT
Castillo vs. Corrales I: 8 p.m. ET/PT

The popular and crowd-pleasing Corrales was known for putting it all on the line. Fistic aficionados loved the dedication of the two-division world champion who spent much of his life in Sacramento , Calif. , and the last couple years in Las Vegas .

Corrales will be remembered as an introspective, articulate, philosophical and thoughtful human being who always opened his heart and mind for people to see. The tribute shows Corrales’ sensitive and humorous sides that combined to make him one of boxing’s most cherished individuals.

“Chico” was a permanent fixture on the network, including his classic first battle against Castillo that will go down as one of the greatest fights in the sport’s storied history.

The 29-year-old Corrales died in a motorcycle accident on May 7, 2007, exactly two years after his historic battle with Castillo. The consummate warrior, Corrales compiled a record of 40-5, 33 KOs.
