English lightweight champion Scott Lawton has today tipped his sparring partner Gary Reid to lift the Commonwealth light-welterweight crown. Lawton, who himself challenged for British title honours earlier this year, has been an integral member of Reid’s training camp and will be a member of Reid’s corner team next Friday..

“Everything has gone according to plan” said Lawton, “and Gary is now fitter and stronger than I’ve ever known him to be before. We are all now cautiously confident of Gary’s chances next Friday and personally I’m very pleased with the level of commitment that he’s shown and with the progress that he’s made in the gym.”

“Olusegun is a formidable opponent and we have studied videos of him very carefully. He is very strong and has very fast hands, he would prove a handful for anyone but we have come up with a strategy that we feel will exploit the weaknesses that we have identified in his game.”

“Olusegun has very fast hands and Gary has been working on his own hand speed so that he can match Ajose punch for punch. He’s also been working on boxing southpaw in order to take away Olusegun’s advantage. Gary has sparred southpaw many times in the past and has no problem adopting this stance. I think he will present Olusegun with a lot of problems that he won’t be expecting.”

“Gary has his own strengths; he is renowned for his power and possess a world class punch but he also has immense courage and is now more focused and determined than ever. Gary also has a wealth of experience which will stand him in good stead; he won’t be overawed, he’s already faced most of the top fighters in his division.”

“Gary will be going down to Crystal Palace to win and although Olusegun is an accomplished boxer he will have his hands full; Gary is a very dangerous proposition for anyone and there are plenty of his former opponents who will confirm that.”

“Whatever happens on Friday I think it will be a close run thing but I am sure Gary has enough to pull this one off. He’s always had the potential, now his opportunity to fulfil it.”

Frank Maloney Promotions presents “Back From The Brink’ at the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre, Ledrington Road London SE19 2BB on June 15, 2007.
