Boxing In Australia: Sherrington Retains Aussie Super Middle Crown, Wants Mundine Next

By Bruce Dingo June 24th, 2007 All Boxing Results

Last night at the Convention Centre in Townsville, Queensland, Australian Super Middleweight Champion Les Sherrington ruthlessly gunned down challenger Shaun Quagliotto in the first round.

The crowd was split between supporters of both local men and the action got off to a bang when Sherrington rocked his rival with a stiff jab. The 25 year old southpaw went straight to work, battering his foe with both hands until Quagliotto was floored heavily.

Quagliotto beat the referee's count but a full blooded right hook returned him to the canvas and Sherrington was declared the winner at 1:19 of the first round.

Sherrington, 15-4 (9), has now won his fourth straight contest and successfully makes the first defense of his second reign as the domestic super middle titlist. The 28 year old Quagliotto drops to 4-3 (3).

Afterward, Sherrington revealed that he had sparred with WBA Champion Anthony Mundine twice so far in 2007 and was hoping for the opportunity to face Australia's top fighter in a genuine contest.

Also on the bill, 19 year old Fred Mundraby, 4-0 (2), won the vacant Australian Bantamweight crown by dropping Leigh Lindgren, 2-3 (1), three times enroute to a second round stoppage.
