Boxing In Germany: Sturm Places WBA Title At Risk Tonight In Stuttgart

By Danny Wilson June 30th, 2007 All Boxing Previews

WBA Middleweight Champion Felix Sturm, 27-2 (12), places his title on the line tonight for the first time since winning the crown in a rematch with Javier Castillejo in April.

The opponent for Sturm at the Porsche Arena in Stuttgart is little known Uruguayan Noe Tulio Gonzalez Alcoba, 14-0 (7).

Fighting out of Sante Fe, Argentina, Alcoba has never been in action outside of South America and has largely been a club fighter since turning pro less than three years ago.

It would be a massive upset if Alcoba, who gone past six rounds just once in his career, a ten round UD victory last December, unseats Sturm as WBA Champion.

If Sturm prevails over Alcoba he must face mandatory challenger Randy Griffin in the fall, likely September 15 in Germany, but there has been talk of the 28 year old Hamburg man taking part in a unification match against Jermain Taylor in America.

On the undercard tonight in Stuttgart, Hamburg based Ukrainian heavyweight Taras Bidenko, 22-2 (12), meets Holland's Richel "The Dutch Sonny Liston" Hersisia, 29-1 (23), while undefeated Hamburg based Russian super middle Dennis Inkin, 30-0 (23), hopes to continue his march towards a world title against Hungarian prospect Jozsef Nagy, 17-0 (11).

Cologne's WIBF Light Fly titlist Julia Sahin, 17-0 (2), places her crown in harm's way against America's ex-Minimum and Straw weight world champion Hollie Dunaway, 19-4 (10), while Stuttgart based Belarus fighter Alesia "The Tigress" Graf, 16-1 (7), looks to defend her GBU Super Fly belt against Karlsruhe's Natascha Gunthier, 5-1-2 (0).
