HBO Boxing: Saturday Night Welterweight Tripleheader!

HBO travels from east to west with a tripleheader of welterweight action when Arturo Gatti vs. Alfonso Gomez, Kermit Cintron vs. Walter Matthysse And Antonio Margarito vs. Paul Williams is seen live Saturday, July 14 At 9:00 PM ET/6:00 PM PT from the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, NJ and the Home Depot Center in Carson, CA. An HBO Sports team will be ringside for both events, which will be presented in HDTV and in Spanish on HBO Latino. The live tripleheader of action kicks off from Atlantic City before finishing in Los Angeles.

In his 21st appearance on HBO, the fighter known as the human highlight reel Arturo Gatti (40-8, 31 KOs) from Jersey City, NJ takes on Alfonso Gomez (16-3-2, 7 KOs) from Whittier, CA in a scheduled 10-round welterweight contest. Gatti, long known for his determined and never quit spirit in the ring, enters this contest with much to prove and he’ll be fighting in front of his loyal south Jersey fan base. Gatti is hoping to rebound after a KO loss to the formidable Carlos Baldomir last July. Gomez, a competitor from the first season of The Contender series, has been building support and name recognition and is looking for a victory over the ring legend to propel him in the sport.

The opening contest from the Atlantic City card pairs two fighters with nearly identical records as Kermit Cintron (27-1, 25 KOs) from Reading, PA faces off against Walter Matthysse (26-1, 25 KOs) out of Trelew, Argentina in a scheduled 12-round welterweight title bout. Cintron, whose goal is to unify the welterweight division, must first take on the dangerous Matthysse. Both fighters are known for their impressive knockout power and heavy hitting styles.

The evening’s telecast concludes with a live switch to the west coast where Antonio Margarito (34-4, 24 KOs) from Tijuana, Mexico, now living in southern California, squares off against undefeated Paul Williams (32-0, 24 KOs) of Augusta, GA in a highly anticipated scheduled 12-round 147-pound title fight. Margarito, who is a title-holder, faces possibly his toughest opponent to date by taking on the undefeated and talented Williams. The 6-foot-1 Williams has been fast-tracking through the division and hopes to capture a title in front of the Home Depot Center audience.
