Boxing Prospects Kevin Johnson, Eric Hunter Win On ShoBox

The popular fistic series ShoBox: The New Generation delivered an exciting night of boxing on Friday, August 3 with heavyweights Kevin “The Kingpin” Johnson and Damian “Bolo” Wills in a fast passed, highly entertaining battle that had the near capacity crowd at Far West Rodeo on their feet for part of the evening. Johnson won a unanimous decision with two judges scoring the bout 99-91 and one judge 100-91.

In the co-feature, stylish super bantamweight Eric Hunter scored a unanimous decision victory against the much bigger Tyrell Samuel. Two judges scored the bout 79-73 and one 78 -74.

Johnson, 16-1, (6), of Douglassville, GA pulled out all the stops for a spectacular showing against Wills in 10 round heavyweight match-up. Wills, 22-2-1 (16), of Los Angeles, CA came charging out of his corner as the bell sounded for round one and attempted to lure Johnson into an immediate slugfest. Johnson was more than willing to engage Wills as the two fighters battled throughout the round.

Johnson began to use his superior jab and handspeed in the second round as Wills continued to press the action. The fighters continued the fastpace, but it quickly became clear that Johnson was to dominate both on the outside and the inside. Johnson did his best work in the sixth round when he had Wills reeling from a barrage of punches. As the bell rang to end the bout, the fighters brought to crowd to its feet as they went toe-to-toe for the final moments of round 10.

“Kevin Johnson throws good jabs but he did a little bit to much showboating,” said Showtime analyst Steve Farhood. “He showed some good combinations. I would have liked to see more. He is a very exciting and entertaining fighter to watch.”

Young Eric Hunter, 8-1 (3), of Philadelphia, PA, displayed excellent hand speed and skill as he dismantled Tyrell Samuel, 9-2, (5), of Baltimore, MD over eight rounds.

Nick Charles and Farhood called the action from ringside. The executive producer of “ShoBox” is Gordon Hall with Richard Gaughan producing.
