Boxing In Australia: WBA Champion Anthony Mundine Blind In One Eye

By Simon Jackson August 8th, 2007 All Boxing Articles

WBA Super Middleweight Champion Anthony Mundine's desire to fight the winner of the Joe Calzaghe vs. Mikkel Kessler bout may have to be put on hold after a severe eye infection has left the Sydneysider with no vision in one eye.

The 32 year old is expected to remain in hospital for up to ten days after his eye became infected from reportedly cleaning one of his contact lenses with his mouth.

"They're just fighting a severe infection at the moment," his manager Khoder Nasser said, (Fox Sports reports). The infection's that severe they're just going to have to fight that first before they can tell what's going on.

"He's definitely going to be in hospital for at least the next seven to 10 days, that's a minimum. It's pretty serious, that's why he's in bed in hospital."

Asked if Mundine had any vision out of his left eye, Khoder replied: "At the moment no, not at all."

The 5'11" Mundine defeated Pablo Daniel Zamora Nievas at Queensland's Gold Coast on June 27 to continue his second reign with the belt he first won four years ago.

The Australian had unsuccessfully challenged the still unbeaten Mikkel Kessler for the title in June 2005 and regained the vacant belt in March with a win over Sam Soliman after the Dane was upgraded to WBA super champion last October.
