British Boxing: Nelson Planning For A Bradford Double

By Boxing Press August 20th, 2007 All Press Releases

Robert Nelson is on a mission to ensure Bradford has two champions at the The Dome at Doncaster Lakeside on Friday, September 7.

Nelson challenges fellow Yorkshireman Andy Bell for the inaugural English super-flyweight title as chief support to Junior Witter’s WBC world light-welterweight title defence against Guyana’s Vivian Harris on the Hennessy Sports show which will be screened live by Sky Sports.

Nelson is an old friend of fellow Bradford boxer Witter who he sees as an inspiration after the WBC champion won British, Commonwealth and European titles on the way to world glory.

And unbeaten Nelson is unconcerned about facing Bell in his home town of Doncaster.

“I boxed all over the country and abroad as an amateur so it doesn’t bother me how many fans he has there on the night,” said Robert.

“I will have a few fans there myself and intend to make sure Bradford has two champions on the night – me and Junior, who I have known since we were young.

“Junior has gone the whole way and that is great inspiration for me, someone from my home city doing that.

“It’s great to be fighting on the same card as him and I would love to do the same was what he has achieved.

“There are fewer super-flyweights around but first I have to get established at domestic level.

“I hope to fight for the big titles in a few years, like the European title, so this is a good opportunity for me to move on and I intend to take it.”

The 26-year-old, a former ABA finalist, is out to make up for the disappointment of the controversy over his last display against Mo Khaled in May, the second of two draws in his pro career.

“I had a bad start but I thought I won at least four of the six rounds so I was disgusted by the decision,” said Nelson.

“I don’t know much about Andy so I see it as a 50-50 fight. The fact that he has been stopped twice is a confidence booster for me, but at least one of those was by a bigger man.

“I could have made flyweight so I can make super-flyweight easy. Everything has gone well training.”
