British Beat: Maccarinelli vs. LaMontagne.

By Matt Cotterell January 21st, 2005 All Boxing Articles, Boxing News

Bridgend Recreation Centre.

W.B.U Cruiserweight champion Enzo Maccarinelli kicked off 2005 with a four round hammering of American fringe contender Rich LaMontagne. LaMontagne hit the deck twice in the opening session, the first appeared to be a delayed reaction from a left hook to the body, the second was more clear cut as Maccarinelli landed a left hook to the head followed by a straight right hand which dumped LaMontagne on the canvas as the round came to a close. LaMontagne came out for the second on stiff legs, but to his credit, tried to do a little more work, it was however a fruitless exercise as Maccarinelli opened up landing more hurtful punches and if LaMontagne wasn’t quite saved by the bell in the first, he certainly was in the second as another left hook from Maccarinelli deposited him on the canvas for the third time.

LaMontagne came under fire again in the third as a left hook to the body had him doubled over, although no knockdown was registered, LaMontagne could clearly be seen touching the canvas with his glove. The fourth round saw the end of LaMontagne’s challenge as a pair of Maccarinelli left hooks had him on very unsteady legs and displaying a look of surrender, despite the predictable protestations referee Dave Parris did him a favour and called a halt to the action. At the finish Maccarinelli once again laid down the challenge to W.B.O champion Johnny Nelson.

Maccarinelli moves on to 20(14)-1 whilst LaMontagne drops to 29(24)-7-1.
