KO Artists Jones And Poore Feature On Peltz Boxing Bill October 5

By Boxing Press September 19th, 2007 All Press Releases

Power-punching Mike Jones, one of the hottest prospects in the welterweight division, goes for his eleventh knockout in 11 pro fights when he boxes Richard Lee Hall, of Rocky Mount, NC, in the eight-round semifinal Friday evening, Oct. 5, at the New Alhambra, Swanson and Ritner Streets, in South Philadelphia. First of seven fights at 7.30 p.m.

Topping the card is a 10 round junior welterweight contest featuring Mike Stewart, of New Castle, DE, and Robert Frankel, of Denver, CO.

CN8 will televise the Stewart-Frankel and Jones-Hall fights, as well as an eight-round heavyweight match between John Poore, of Upper Darby, PA, and Dan Whetzel, of Toledo, OH, on a delayed basis Saturday evening, Oct. 6, at 9.30 p.m. to more than seven million homes from Maine to Maryland.

The show also will be available through Comcast On Demand.

Jones, 24, of North Philadelphia, is coming off a fifth-round stoppage of Martinus Clay, of Wilson, NC, on Aug. 31 at the Seneca Niagara Casino in Niagara Falls, NY. Body shots did the damage in that fight.

Prior to that, Jones had K0'd Doel Carrasquillo, of Lancaster, PA, in three rounds July 20 at the New Alhambra.

A pro less than two years, the 5-foot-11 Jones forced Carrasquillo to quit on his stool after punishing him with hard jabs and body shots for two rounds. Carrasquillo had K0'd seven of his previous eight foes.

Hall, 32, has a 10-19-2 record with four knockouts, but he has boxed much better competition than Jones.

In the last five years, Hall has not boxed anyone with a losing record. In fact, since 2002, the combined record of Hall’s last 15 opponents is 161-27-13. Since turning pro in 1999, Hall has boxed 14 undefeated men. His opponents include: Joachim Alcine, current WBA junior middleweight champion; Nick Acevedo from The Contender reality show; Anthony Thompson, of Philadelphia, PA; Delvin Rodriguez, a frequent ESPN 2 attraction; David Estrada, world-ranked contender from Miami, FL.

In his last fight Aug. 25 in Ocean City, MD, Hall lost an eight-round decision to 12-0 Tim Coleman, of Baltimore, MD.

Poore has 18 knockouts on his 18-2 record, but the 36-year old former squid processor also has been K0'd twice himself, by Robert Hawkins and Cerrone Fox. He ended a 14-month layoff Aug. 10 by stopping Dione Craig, of Cincinnati, OH, in five rounds at the Alhambra.

Whetzel, 35, is 9-11-1, 5 K0s, but comes to Philadelphia after winning a six-round decision over Corey Gregory, of Cleveland, OH, on Aug. 16 in Toledo, OH. Whetzel has boxed Vinny Maddalone, Mike Marrone, David Rodriguez and Travis Kaufman, all solid opposition.

Four additional fights complete the program. Tickets priced at $40, $55 and $65 are on sale at the offices of Peltz Boxing Promotions, Inc. (215-765-0922) or at www.peltzboxing.com.
