Oliver McCall - Juan Carlos Gomez Rematch

By Boxing Press October 4th, 2007 All Press Releases

It is just a couple of weeks before Oliver McCall before his long-awaited rematch with Juan Carlos Gomez on Friday, October 19 at the Estrel Convention Center in Berlin, Germany. The former World Heavyweight Champion and current WBC International Heavyweight Champion Oliver “The Atomic Bull” McCall is gearing up to not only put on the fight of his life, but to send Gomez packing via a spectacular knockout.

“I’m tired of decisions,” smiled McCall, who followed a streak of five consecutive knockout wins with points victories over Marion Wilson and Sinan Samil Sam in 2007. “I want to end the year with a bang and I can’t think of anyone I’d like to knock out more than Juan Carlos Gomez.”

Unbeaten since 2004, the only blemish since then on the record of McCall (51-8 with 36 knockouts) is a 2005 no contest with Gomez, ruled as such after the former cruiserweight champion tested positive for cocaine.

“I don’t respect guys like Gomez, who try to cheat to get an edge,” said McCall, best remembered for winning the WBC Heavyweight title in 1994 by stopping future Hall of Famer Lennox Lewis in two rounds. “I’ll tell you this though; nothing’s gonna help him on October 19th when I put my hands on him.”

As for traveling outside of the United States to fight Gomez, a native of Cuba is based in Germany, McCall, 42 years young, insists that it’s not an issue as he looks for his 52nd win as a professional.

“I beat Lennox Lewis in England, beat Sinan Samil Sam in Turkey, and I’m going to beat Juan Carlos Gomez in Germany,” said McCall. “All I need is a referee who can count to ten, and he can do it in English, Spanish, or German.”
