Reigning British Lightweight titlist Jon Thaxton walked through a wall of leather from challenger Dave Stewart last night on a Hennessy Sports promotion to ultimately ground down his stablemate in a bloody display of grit and determination.
The towering Scotsman Stewart repeatedly picked off the far shorter champion through the first seven rounds as Thaxton sought to break his foe down to size by launching wide arcing power shots that rarely found the mark.
But the constant movement which Thaxton forced upon the challenger began to pay dividends in the eighth as the sharply skilled Stewart slowed down enough for Thaxton to catch up with him, although the Norwich based champion had to endure the full arsenal of his rival in order to begin landing his own offense.
Both men came out of the round cut around the right eye and the challenger could not keep Thaxton off any longer and the powerfully built southpaw began the process of reducing his 6 foot tall antagonist.
The final three frames saw Thaxton put the full brunt of his educated pressure on the lanky transplanted Scot and by the final round, Stewart was felled by vicious body assault and while he did managed to bravely rise to his feet and beat the count, the fight was soon stopped as Thaxton pummeled Stewart with nothing coming back from the challenger.
Thaxton defends the British title for the second time and moves to 33-7 (18) while Stewart fails to win the domestic crown for the second time and drops to 20-2 (5).
Jon Thaxton feels he has a point to prove in the second defence of his British Lightweight Title against Dave Stewart at the York Hall, Bethnal Green, on October 5.
