Boxing In Germany: Juan Carlos Gomez Outpoints Oliver McCall In Berlin

By Danny Wilson October 20th, 2007 All Boxing Results

Berlin's Estrel Convention Centre was the site of a major European boxing card last night with former world cruiserweight champion turned heavyweight Juan Carlos Gomez handling ex-WBC Heavyweight champ Oliver McCall over twelve rounds in the main event.

The pair had met two years before in a contest that German based Cuban Gomez had won on points but was later changed to a no contest after a failed post-fight drug test.

This time, the 42 year old McCall fought cautiously, hardly moving out of his tight defense while Gomez tried to find openings for his long southpaw jab and the occasional hook.

McCall finally lept into action during the tenth round and hammered his antagonist with serious right hands but didn't have enough energy to finish off the former cruiserweight.

Gomez survived and went on to get his second wind, cautiously keeping McCall at the end of the jab before being awarded the points win 118-110 (twice) and 116-112.

The Cuban wins a WBC eliminator with the victory and rises to 43-1 (35). McCall falls to 51-9 (36).

On the undercard, 41 year old former two time WBA Light Heavyweight Champion Silvio Branco, 56-9-2 (34), stopped 43 year old Brazilian Peter Venancio, 46-10-1 (36), on cuts in the ninth to win the WBC International crown and take the the WBO Latino belt.

Former European Heavyweight titlist Sinan Samil Sam, 28-4 (15), outpointed Ivica Perkovic, 14-9 (10), over twelve rounds to win the vacant WBC Mediterranean belt.

Former WBC International Welter titlist Alpaslan Aguzum, 34-4 (15), tried his luck at contending for the middleweight version of that belt but was crushed in a single round by Italy's Domenico Spada, 24-1 (13).
