Boxing In Canada: Lontchi Defeats Ex-World Champ Carbajal In Montreal

By Richard Eberline November 12th, 2007 All Boxing Results

At the Casino in Montreal, Quebec, local undefeated prospect Olivier Lontchi notched the biggest win of his career to date by handily outpointing former WBO Bantamweight Champion Cruz Carbajal to cage the vacant WBO NABO and NABA Super Bantam titles.

Lontchi, 14-0-1 (6), took a big step up in competition to face Carbajal, 28-15-2 (24), who was much more experienced than the novices and journeymen that the Montreal man had shared the ring with so far.

33 year old Carbajal of Veracruz, Mexico had owned the WBO crown from 2002-2003 and holds victories over Danny Romero, Jorge Lacierva, Mauricio Martinez, Hugo Dianzo and Steve Dotse and recently drew with former IBF Featherweight beltholder Eric Aiken.

Despite the obvious edge in experience, Carbajal wasn't able to dicate the terms of this bout with Lontchi, who utilized all the advantages of youth to keep the Mexican veteran at bay.

Never a boxer by nature, Carbajal was unable to get in close and set up shop on the inside where he could mount the kind of vicious body assault that won him a world title.

Lontchi managed distance well with the jab and timed Carbajal with stinging counters time and time again but was unable to stop the determined visitor on the way to posting a wide 120-108 (twice), 119-109 decision win.

On the undercard, another Montreal prospect was successful, light welter Antonin Decarie, 16-0 (5), who outpointed Indiana based Mexican Frankie Zepeda, 16-6 (9), over eight rounds 80-69 and 80-70 (twice).
