Duva Suspension Lifted!

By Boxing Press November 15th, 2007 All Press Releases

NYSAC votes to retract six-month term and place promoter on probation.

Promoter Dino Duva of Duva Boxing is happy to announce that after a hearing on the matter, the suspension he received in October has been retracted by the New York State Athletic Commission.

Duva, promoter of Interim WBC Heavyweight Champion Samuel Peter, had originally been suspended for six months and fined $10,000 for attempting to look at the master scorecards during Peter's nearly disastrous first title defense against Jameel McCline, October 6 at Madison Square Garden.

While the apologetic Duva never denied that his "emotions got the best of him" and he did attempt to peek at the scoring that night, he steadfastly maintained he in no way intended to gain an unfair advantage for Peter.

"I had a hearing to appeal their decision last week and today they (the NYSAC) voted to reverse it and retract the suspension. I still got fined $10,000, but they got rid of the suspension and put me on probation instead," explained the New Jersey-based promoter. "I am very happy that they lifted the suspension and extremely sorry for what happened, but now we can move on and attempt to conduct as much business as possible in New York."

Duva says he regrets his actions that night and calls what happened a "nervous reaction" to the peril his company's flagship fighter was in, early in the bout. "I want to thank all the New York Athletic Commissioners for this wonderful decision regarding my appeal and I also want to sincerely thank my excellent attorney Walter Kane, of New York, who represented me during this process. I highly recommend him for anyone who needs an attorney in New York."

Duva will now be allowed promotional involvement in Peter's scheduled unification fight against WBC Champion, Oleg Maskaev, scheduled for February 2 of next year.
