Risum Boxing: “Golden Boy” Kim Poulsen Schools Peter Buckley

By Boxing Press November 30th, 2007 All Press Releases

In what was another promising display of boxing, Danish super featherweight prospect Kim “Golden Boy” Poulsen did what several future world champions couldn’t do, when he knocked down 290-fight British veteran, and former Midlands Area champion, Peter “The Professor” Buckley in the second round on his way to a clear 60-53 verdict from scoring referee Mark Green on Wednesday night, November 28, at the Café Royal in London.

With the victory, Poulsen’s third at the Café Royal, the 20-year-old improved his record to 6-1 (1), with the sole blemish being a very controversial one-point defeat to Frenchman Tony Jourda this past April at the Savoy Hotel, also in London.

For the Buckley-fight, Poulsen came in at his heaviest ever (63,5 kilos), but it was not due to lack of training, but simply because Buckley (66,7 kilos) these days fights at light welter and welter, and Poulsen therefore didn’t have to make weight as usual. It was a one-time-only thing.

Knowing that Buckley hardly ever gets knocked down or stopped, it was not expected that Poulsen could so either, but with his precise and quick punches, it quickly became evident that the Dane could hit the cagey Birmingham-journeyman with combinations, and the left jab worked particularly well for Poulsen.

In the second round, and hard right hook connected high on Buckley’s head, and he went down on one knee to take the eight count from referee Green. Poulsen didn’t manage to finish him off, but it showed that having just one knockout-victory in seven fights does not do his punching-power justice.

The remainder of the bout was more of the same, with Poulsen picking his shots nicely and Buckley evading what he could, but taking many shots and loosing every round as Poulsen dominated his heavier foe from bell to bell.

A satisfied trainer, Brian Mathiasen, found it hard to put a critical finger on anything his protégée did in the English capital:

“There is not much to say, except that Kim did what we expected of him,” said Mathiasen.

“He boxed well, and gained six valuable rounds of experience along the way against a guy who has fought the best and seen it all. We are happy, and look forward to 2008.”

Risum Boxing plan for Poulsen to return in early 2008 in what will be another step in the education of Denmark’s youngest professional fighter. However, on the November 28, 2007 at the Café Royal in London, England, it was “The Golden Boy” who schooled “The Professor”.
