Tony Oakey vs. Peter Haymer A Classic Boxing Rematch

By Boxing Press January 11th, 2008 All Press Releases

Two and a half years after losing a controversial title fight to Peter Haymer, British light heavyweight champion Tony Oakey gets the chance to revenge what he calls daylight robbery. This mouth watering rematch takes place at York Hall in Bethnal Green, London on Friday, February 1 as Frank Maloney Promotions kicks off 2008 in style.

Oakey, 24-2-1 (6), saved his career by becoming British Champion last year with a masterful last round stoppage of Steve Spartacus, will be making his second defense of his title. Opponent Haymer, 17-4-1 (5), the much more skillful boxer and technician, is confident of ending Oakey's career and sending him back to the wilds of Portsmouth.

The pair initially met at York Hall in June, 2005 with English 175 lb champion at the time Haymer pulling out the 95-94 points win that so incensed Oakey and has fueled the South Coast man's remarkable comeback.

The February 1 card card features one of Britain's best heavyweights, John McDermott and Britain's only professional Sikh boxer, super feather Kaash "The Bash" Bhatia, who steps up for his first eight rounder.

Lightning-fisted light heavyweight hopeful Tony Salem steps up to face ex-Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist Courtney Fry and bruising Manchester based welter Mark Thompson steps in with dangerous puncher Yassine El Maachi.

Rounding out the undercard is a thrilling lightweight contest between unbeaten prospects Lee Cook and Danny Harding, super feather Henry Castle, welterweights Scott Woolford and Jamie Radford, as well as light welter Ross Hewitt.

The bill also sees Frank Maloney promoting his first Women's Boxing fight featuring Laura Saperstein, who has given up a legal career to concentrate on boxing. What made Frank Maloney change his views on women boxing?

Maloney has also won the purse bid for Gary "Hot Stuff" Wolcombe's mandatory British light middleweight title defense against former champion Ryan Rhodes. This fight will take place in London in April, with chief support provided by John McDermott against Pele Reid for the English heavyweight title.

Frank Maloney Promotions presents "The Return" featuring Tony Oakey vs. Peter Haymer for the Light Heavyweight Championship of Great Britain along with full undercard at York Hall in Bethnal Green, London, England on Friday, February 1, 2008.

Tickets are priced at £75 Ringside and £40 Open Seating and are available by logging onto www.frankmaloney.com or by calling the Box Office at 0871 226 1508. Doors open at 6:45PM with first bell at 7PM.
