One of the greatest boxers of all times MAX SCHMELING has just passed away in his hometown in Germany at the age of 99. A great loss for Boxing but also for human values in general. He won the vacant World Heavyweight Championship from Jack Sharkey on early 30's, lossing it rightafter against the same opponent on a controversial decision, but after which he made the "fight of his career" on 1936 when stopping then-unbeaten JOE LOUIS at the New York Yankee Stadium. Nevertheless besides all his sport achievements Schmeling was knows around the World for his personal integrity. At the peak of his career Hitler's nazism tried to manipulate his victory in America as the dominance of the "aryan race" overall. However he refused to play this role and even helped jewish close friends to scape from the anti-Semitic violence. Because of this he was sent by Hitler to the Nazi army on World War II to dangerous assignments. However he survived and became later on a Millionaire as Coca-Cola Executive.
Even on late "hard-times" for Joe Louis, Schmeling stood close and supported him financially.
European and World Boxing have lost a star. Heaven has just gained one ... Goodbye Max!!
