Boxing Update: Jose Luis Castillo Fails To Make Weight Again

By Boxing Press March 8th, 2008 All Press Releases

Bradley Declared WBC 140 Lb Champ Witter's Mandatory Challenger

WBC undefeated No. 1 super lightweight contender Timothy "Desert Storm" Bradley was left at the scale alone at yesterday's official weigh-in for their WBC super lightweight title elimination bout.

Bradley (21-0, 11 KOs), from Palm Springs, Calif., weighed a tight 139 lbs, one pound under the limit. Castillo (56-8-1, 48 KOs), from Mexicali, Mexico, the WBC's No. 2-rated contender, never showed thus forcing the bout's cancellation, scheduled for Saturday night on the Oleg Maskaev-Samuel Peter WBC heavyweight championship card.

Reportedly, Castillo was medically not allowed to fight. Two hours before the official weigh in, in an unofficial weight check, he tipped the scales at 144.5 lbs. A doctor was brought in and it was decided to scratch the fight due to his weak condition.

"Jose Sulaiman, president of the WBC, stated that Bradley would be named the WBC's mandatory super lightweight challenger," said Alex Camponovo from Thompson Boxing Promotions, who was at the weigh-in. Bradley is promoted by Gary Shaw Productions and Thompson Boxing Promotions.

"This is not the way we wanted to become the mandatory challenger, but we are gratified that Mr. Sulaiman and the WBC did right by Timothy, recognizing that he shouldn't be penalized for adhering to its rules and regulations. We look forward to meeting with Junior Witter's team at the appropriate time to begin negotiations for the world title fight."
