Joe and Marvis Frazier announce their latest project; Smokin’ Joe Frazier’s Broad Street Girls Boxing Team.
With their Philadelphia gym undergoing a resurgence, Joe and Marvis Frazier find themselves in the enviable position of having a large group of their fighters turning professional this year.
Amongst these aspirants are three women; welterweight Faatimah "Tamika" Balmer from West Philadelphia, featherweight Marianne Marston from London, England and light heavyweight Diane "Dee" Moses, from Jacksonville, Florida - whom don't just train and sparr together regularly, but have also become good friends outside the gym.
Marvis Frazier, the team’s main coach, explains why he and his father decided to create the team “It’s good to see people working together in the gym, but it’s not just that with these girls," he said. "They train, spar, support and inspire each other in every way. This is how a team should be and they deserve the recognition because of it.”
Recognition is coming from other quarters as well, as the Smokin’ Joe Frazier’s Broad Street Girls Boxing Team have already attracted interest from a major sponsor seeking to support the current squad and any new members, for at least five years. It is hoped that the official sponsor announcement will be made shortly.
