Boxing info: Glen Johnson within weight limit

By Boxing Press March 14th, 2008 All Press Releases

It’s been a long couple of years for Glen Johnson as he’s waited for his chance to regain the world light heavyweight championship. Along the way he’s watched the big names at 175 pounds duck and dodge him while all he did was win, recently stopping the likes of Montell Griffin and Hugo Pineda in devastating fashion.

But on April 12th, at the St. Pete Times Forum in Tampa, Florida, Johnson will return to his home state to battle unbeaten young gun Chad Dawson for the Dawson’s WBC light heavyweight world championship.

The bout is part of a Showtime doubleheader that includes another key light heavyweight bout between Antonio Tarver and Clinton Woods, fighters Johnson is very familiar with, having fought them a combined five times.

“I have unfinished business with both Tarver and Woods, but first things first, and that’s Chad Dawson,” said Johnson (47-11-2, 32 KOs). “I give him credit for being the only one to step up and give me my shot, and I assure him that we can have a rematch after I take his belt on April 12th.”

Johnson on Tuesday did his 30 day official weighin for WBC supervisor Bismarck Morales, weighing in at 186 pounds, just eleven pounds over the 175 pound light heavyweight limit. With just under a month to go before fight night, the 39-year old Johnson is raring to go and eager to take his rightful place atop the division once again.

“This has been a great camp so far and I feel better than ever,” said Johnson, who upped his knockout streak to three in January as he stopped Pineda in eight rounds. “I can’t wait to get in the ring on April 12th and win the title back. It’s been a long time coming.”
