Impact Boxing: Gary Reid Gets Call for Fewkes Rematch

By Boxing Press March 20th, 2008 All Press Releases

Stoke welterweight Gary Reid has been presented with the opportunity to avenge an eight round points reversal at the hands of John Fewkes last October. Despite taking the fight to Fewkes last time, Reid lost the decision by two rounds and felt hard done by afterwards.

Most recently, an under par Reid (he had been suffering from flu) lost against Scott Haywood two weeks ago. Sheffieldʼs Fewkes has not fought since October and he now boasts a 100% record from 16 fights. Since then however, Fewkes has been made the mandatory challenger to John Murrayʼs English lightweight title.

The fight takes place next Friday in Fewkesʼ back yard at the Barnsley Metrodome and will be part of the undercard to Reidʼs teammate, Chris Edwardsʼ defence of his British super-flyweight title.

Reid will be fired up for this one since it probably represents the 34 year oldʼs last chance to establish himself as a contender for a major title. Reid is also scheduled to meet hot prospect Dean Harrison of Wolverhampton in an eight round contest at Wolverhampton Civic Hall on April 30. Harrison, now 11-0-0, has been tipped to continue his rapid progress through the light-welterweight ranks and is certainly a class act.

"This is fantastic news for me," said Reid. "I thought that Iʼd done enough to beat John last time; he just back pedalled throughout the fight while I took it to him. Thatʼs history now though and I intend to do better this time.

"Iʼm fit and Iʼve recovered from the flu and Iʼve just had some tough sparring with Willie Limond. More importantly, I am determined to pull off a victory. Iʼll think about Harrison after this fight and besides, Iʼve got plenty of time to prepare for that one."
