Former WBU Super Featherweight king Michael Gomez was sensationally stopped in the sixth round of his third world title title defense at Manchester's MEN arena on Friday night. Despite a measured first round in which Gomez established good use of the jab, there were signs from as early as the second, where a cut opened up above his left eye, that this perhaps wasn't going to be the Mancunian's night.
Sticking to the gameplan, Gomez continued to come forward and apply pressure in the third, actually having some success and keeping Alvarez on the back-foot, but the Argentinian looked to have Gomez figured out and showed excellent handspeed to land several unanswered fast and accurate combinations in the final minute of the round.
Sensing the swing in momentum, Alvarez picked up the pace in the fourth and
fifth, actually pushing Gomez against the ropes and at times was teeing off on the Mancunian who's left eye was beginnning to swell badly. Gomez rallied, showing typical heart and determination but was clearly struggling to see out of the closing eye.
Unable to see the shots coming, or land any of his own, the inevitable
happened mid way through the sixth, when Mickey Vann quite rightly stopped
the fight to prevent the Mancunian from taking any further punishment.
It was a sad and unsatisfactory end to an otherwise entertaining card in which Steve Foster Junior claimed the WBU featherweight championship of the
world and Michael Jennings delighted the home fans with a stoppage of Romanian Vasile Dragomir.
