This past Thursday night, Don Juan Futrell, 21-3-2 (10), fought Lowell Brownfield, 10-4-1 (3), in the main event at the Tachi Palace Casino in Lemoore, CA. On the line was Futrell's WBC USNBC light welterweight title.
The action started off slow, but heated up in the second round when Brownfield dropped Futrell with a powerful left hook. Futrell would get off the canvas and fight his way back to a close round.
As the fight continued, both men would have their moments. Futrell landed some nice combos in the middle rounds while Brownfield boxed well from the outside late.
When the final bell rang, both fighters thought they won. Judge Michael Tate had it 95-93 for Brownfield, judge Abe Belardo scored it 93-96 for Futrell, and judge Ralph McKnight saw it even at 94-94, making it a draw.
With the scoring by the judges, the WBC USNBC light welterweight title becomes vacant.
Bearing further negotiation, a possible rematch between Futrell and Brownfield is in the table for on August 21, 2008 when the Tachi Palace presents its next show.
