Boxing In Argentina: Garay vs. Barashian Tonight For WBA Light Heavy Title

Tonight at the famed Luna Park Stadium in Buenos Aires, Argentina, the WBA Light Heavyweight title vacated by Australia’s Danny Green will be fought over by Hugo Hernan Garay and Yuri Barashian.

For Garay, 30-3 (17), this could be the breakthrough moment denied to him during narrow split and majority decision losses to WBO titlist Zsolt Erdei in Germany in 2004 and 2005. The 27 year old Buenos Aires man sees what has to be his best chance to win a world title tonight as the venue will be packed with adoring fans.

Standing in the way of Garay will be Ukrainian southpaw, Yuri Barashian, who hasn’t lost in almost five years.

Barashian, 25-3 (17), is coming off the biggest win of his career in February when he knocked out Thomas Ulrich in eight rounds to capture the European title but will be facing a more difficult proposition in the form of Garay.

Neither Garay or Barashian have faced a lot of top tier competition but with the stakes at their highest, a ferociously contentious bout is sure to take place tonight at Luna Park as the fate of the WBA title hangs in the balance.

On the undercard, Hector Javier Velazco, 37-7-1 (16), takes on Gusmyl Perdomo, 14-2 (8), for the vacant WBA Fedelatin Super Middleweight crown and Marcela Eliana Acuna, 28-5 (15), meets Danielle Bouchard, 9-1-1 (1), for the WBA Female Super Bantam belt.

Mauricio Javier Munoz, 14-0 (8), faces Diego Jose Reimundo Hernandez, 16-7 (8), for the WBA Fedebol Super Bantam trophy.
