Boxing Weigh-In: David Barnes vs. Barry Morrison

By Jane Warburton July 4th, 2008 All Boxing Previews

Yesterday at 'Touchbase' in the Premier Inn on Albert Dock in Liverpool, England, Matchroom Sports held the weigh-in for tonight's fightnight at the Everton Park Sports Centre, Liverpool. Headlining the 'bill' is David Barnes' defence of the British Light Welterweight title against former titleist, the Scotsman Barry Morrison.

But it was a nerve-racking time for Barnesy as he arrived late for the weigh-in and then scaled 14 ounces over the limit! Stripping off his underwear - Barnes took to the scales again to see how much he needed to lose. The second weight revealed an 11 ounce loss was needed and he had just one hour to shed the weight.

Morrison, who had weighed in 2 ounces under the target, was forced to wait it out for an hour.

Meanwhile, Stuart Elwell, of Wednesbury, tipped the scales at a perfect 10 stone 5 lb [145 lb]. 'I feel great', Elwell told SaddoBoxing and he did indeed look very relaxed and calm.

Trainer Bob Plant was excited about the prospect of Elwell winning the fight against former European Champion Ted Bami, but Bami had other problems to think about - as he too weighed in over the limit at 10 stone 7 lb and 9.5 ounces [147.5 lb].

Bami, looking 'cool' wandered off to lose the excess and came back just a short while later weighing in again - this time at 10 stone 5 lb and 6 ounces [145.5 lb]

Barnes came back to the scales at 4.05 pm, [his deadline was 4.15 pm] and still had two ounces to lose, so quickly dashed off again, returning less than ten minutes later to get the 'thumbs up' from officials.

Other weights today included:

David Dolan, 14 stone 8 lb [196.5 lb] of Sunderland will face Brazilian Elvecio Sobral in a six round cruiserweight contest.

Scott Quigg, 8 stone 13 lb 4 ounces [125.5 lb] of Bury faces Italian Angelo Villani, 9 stone 1 lb [127 lb] in a six round featherweight contest.

John Donnelly of Liverpool faces Frenchman Faycal Massaoudene in a six round bantamweight contest. Both weighed in at 8 stone 7 lb [119 lb].

Other undercard boxers will weigh-in tomorrow.
