Today, the EBU announced that Sinan Samil Sam is the new European heavyweight champion. “The Bull from Bosporus” had faced Italian warrior Paolo Vidoz in a 12 round-battle in Ankara , Turkey , on July 4.
The fight ended in a controversial draw after one of the judges had changed his scoring of the 12th and final round. After the EBU investigated the scoring the concerned judge admitted his mistake and confirmed that he keeps his initial scoring of the round of 10-10 which makes Sam the winner by split decision.
“Of course, I am very happy about the final decision”, states Sam. “I know that I won the fight and I was very disappointed when the draw was announced. I would have loved to celebrate the title with my fans in Ankara .”
“All that counts is that justice won in the end”, adds promoter Ahmet Öner.
Sam will receive the championship belt at an official press conference in Istanbul next Monday on July 21st.
Asked for his future plans Sinan Samil Sam says: “Now that I am European champion again I want to take the next step and finally fight for a world title and become heavyweight champion of the world. My promoter brought the European championship to Ankara – I am sure that he can bring a world title fight to Istanbul as well!”
“Sinan showed that he is still one of the best heavyweights in the world”, adds Öner. “Now all doors are open to him.”
