Odlanier Solis is new WBC International Heavyweight Champion. “La Sombra” beat Chauncy Welliver by TKO as referee Daniel Van de Wiele stopped the one-sided fight in round nine.
“Of course, Solis can still improve”, says promoter Ahmet Öner. “But it was a very convincing victory and he showed that he is capable of achieving great things. Winning the international title was an important step for him. Welliver is a tough guy; he had never been stopped before.”
The Olympic Gold Medallist and three-time world amateur champion dominated his opponent as clearly as Vitali Klitschko did in the main event stopping Samuel Peter after the seventh and winning every round on the way.
New WBC Heavyweight Champion Klitschko has to defend his belt against Solis’ stablemate Juan Carlos Gomez now. “We are looking forward to Vitali vs. Gomez”, adds Öner. “This will be a great fight and we will make good money with it. With Juan (#1), Sinan (#11) and Solis (#15) we got three heavyweights in the WBC rankings now. Nobody can stop us.”
