Golden Boy Promotions Signs Boxing Prospects Rodela, Huerta

Despite Golden Boy Promotions’ reputation as an international boxing powerhouse, company President Oscar de la Hoya’s roots remain firmly in California, and he is proud to announce the signing of two of the state’s finest prospects – “Dangerous” David Rodela and Charles Huerta – to promotional deals.

“It always feels good to put the top local talent in California on a world stage and David Rodela and Charles Huerta are getting ready to take that next step in their careers,” said De La Hoya. “Both David and Charles have proven themselves to be among the best young fighters in the game today and together we’re going to help them achieve their dreams in the coming years.”

Oxnard’s “Dangerous” David Rodela, 11-1-2 (6), is a tough junior lightweight from a tough town, one that is home to a host of standouts such as former world champions Fernando “Ferocious” Vargas and Roberto “Grandpa” Garcia, as well as “Vicious” Victor Ortiz, Jose Aguiniga and Rolando “Pochito” Reyes.

Now looking to make his own name in the fight game, the 26-year-old Rodela has shown the ability to fight anywhere from 126 to 135 pounds and in his most recent bout on October 10, “Dangerous” David scored an eight round decision over former world champion Kevin Kelley.

“Signing with Golden Boy is a dream come true,” said Rodela, who has also earned a reputation for his work with Manny Pacquiao and who will help prepare Ricky Hatton for his November 22 bout with Paul Malignaggi. “Never in a million years would I have thought I would be fighting for Golden Boy one day. I want to make them and Oscar proud. After seeing all his belts on the wall at the Golden Boy office, 19 belts, all I want is one of them. I look forward to becoming a World Champion.”

Former amateur standout Charles Huerta, 7-0 (4), has been the talk of the local boxing scene for years and the Maywood, California featherweight has boxing insiders looking at him as one of the game’s most promising talents.

Getting better with each fight, Huerta has thrilled fans with the dynamite in his fists, which has seen him win his last two bouts by knockout. Huerta will return to the ring this Friday, October 24 to face an opponent to be determined on a TeleFutura “Solo Boxeo” undercard at Morongo Casino in Cabazon, California.

“I feel proud signing with Golden Boy,” said Huerta. “I’m excited and ready to get out there and get that exposure. I feel confident Golden Boy can move me along pretty well and I think as we go along step-by-step, I will get the recognition I’ve always wanted. I really hope to win a world title soon.”
