In just his second bout since 2002, 40 year old heavyweight Francois Botha won the WBF title with a 12 round unanimous decision over American journeyman Ron Guerrero at Tlokwe Banquet Hall in Potchefstroom, South Africa on Friday.
Botha, who now resides in California, weighed in at the heaviest of his career, 268 pounds and looked lethargic against Guerrero as the two wrestled more than they boxed for the entire 12 frames.
But Botha's higher level of skill shone through eventually as he landed at a higher rate of accuracy when he did throw, swaying the judges to a 118-114, 117-110 and 117-111 unanimous decision victory over the younger and more active Guerrero.
Botha improves to 46-4-2 (28) while Guerrero falls to 20-16-3 (14).
On the undercard, towering former Commonwealth Bantamweight Champion Tshifhiwa Munyai, 18-1-1 (9), won his second in a row as the "Atomic Spider" stopped overmatched southpaw novice Vuyolwethu Sirayi, 2-1 (1), in the first round at super bantam.
