One of boxing’s hottest young junior lightweight prospects, John Molina Jr., of Covina, CA has decided to change his nickname from “John John” to two other possible suggestions that were made at the recent press conference held for John’s next bout, held at the Nokia Theatre on March 27, televised on ESPN.
The problem that confronts the Californian is former World Champion John Molina from Fajardo, Puerto Rico made the “John John” nickname famous and although the Covina, CA Molina’s family, friends and boxing world also know him as “John John”, he believes it’s time for his own identity to surface.
“I proudly bear my father’s Mexican name, and unfortunately most people understandably confuse me as the son of the Puerto Rican Molina. So the change is necessary.”
The 26-year old Molina, with a record of 15-0 (11), has put forth the two options for his alias: John, Jr. or The Covina Kid.
Stay tuned for the outcome of this unusual situation.
