Boxing Isn’t Dead – But it sure does look That WayBy Boxing Press May 23rd, 2009 All Boxing Articles
To be fair to Mr. Valuev here, he really didn’t have time to put on any makeup. Those damn paparazzi catch you off guard every time! But look at this guy. At 7-feet-even, not only is he the tallest boxer in the world today; he’s also the most unsightly mo-fo low down ‘round this town. Sho nuff! Despite his zombie-on-stilts-like appearance, Nikolay Valuev, born in the Soviet Union, is probably one of the best things going in the sport today. With MMA continuing to crush professional boxing in ratings, the latter are forced to rely on the skill-set of lower weight-class boxers like Manny Pacquiao to provide the production punch. And even with a professional record of 50-1 with 34 Kos, Valuev can’t seem to pick up a thorough fan base. Now, if his services are secured for the next X-men movie, it will undoubtedly be a worldwide hit. Go figure. Former heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis, at an impressive six-feet five-inches, was once the tallest predator (he even kind of looks like the predator!) prowling the ring. Standing next to Valuev, however, Lewis is a shrinking violet. Could you imagine Tyson standing in the ring with this seven-footer? Iron Mike would probably be able to tell us which religion Nikolay practiced. That’s ludicrous. While Floyd Mayweather is busy ducking Sugar Shane Mosley, the world wants to know what’s on tap for boxing. Where’s our next big fight? Well, fans of the heavyweights won’t have to wait long at all. Get out of that virtual casino and back into the real world. The fight is about to be on. Valuev has fought some tough competitors in his day. No, this doesn’t include a geriatric Evander Holyfield that couldn’t resist coming out of retirement to let The Russian Giant pound on his dense forehead. In 2007, as World Champion, Valuev lost a decision to Ruslan Chagaev. Although a mandatory rematch was set, injuries derailed Chagaev, and the giant had to raid other villages. After a year had passed, Chagaev became the “champion in recess,” with his belt up for grabs. Nikolay seized the opportunity, defeating John Ruiz to gain the title, and in his last fight, defeated the out-of-retirement Holyfield to maintain it. But now it’s on – the rematch we’ve all been waiting for! Ruslan is operating at 100% and Valuev is hungry to avenge his good name. Revenge on the branch of the ugly tree that slapped him is another story entirely. Nikolay’s only defeat was at the hands of Chagaev. More than being a simple rematch, fans can look forward to a no-holds-barred grudge match on May 30. Related Boxing Articles...

With head in clouds and feet firmly planted in the ring, heavyweight boxer-slash-mythical giant Nikolay Valuev manages to do two things: Stomp on his opponents from great heights, and scare children.
