Boxing Result: Berto Defeats Urango, Cintron Upsets Angulo

By Alejandro Tostado May 31st, 2009 All Boxing Results

Last night at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel in Hollywood, FL, Andre Berto retained his WBC welterweight title with a superb points win against challenger Juan Urango.

Urango, the current IBF light welter titlist, employed his trademark pressure approach from the start but had difficulty in finding the target as Berto didn't stick around to be hit.

The champion employed good footwork and showed his cat-quick reflexes in avoiding the tear up that Urango wanted, giving the Colombian challenger a crisp boxing lesson instead.

Berto showed his class in zipping in stinging single shots and sharp counters, mostly upstairs, and controlled the pace enroute to a well deserved 118-110 twice and 117-111 points victory.

Retaining the WBC welterweight title, Berto improves to 25-0 (19) while Urango finds the jump up a division too much to handle against such a talented foe and loses his first in over two years to fall to 21-2-1 (16).

An upset of sorts took place on the undercard as surging light middleweight destroyer Alfredo Angulo finally hit a roadblock he couldn't mow right through in the form of former two-time welterweight champ Kermit Cintron.

Big puncher Cintron appears to have learned not to stand in front of top class opponents and trade shots after two stoppage losses to Antonio Margarito as the Pennsylvania man displayed good boxing skills in handling Angulo.

Angulo came forward looking for a fight but Cintron wisely chose not to give him one, preferring to stick and move, outworking the Mexican and landing a higher percentage of shots.

Cintron improves to 31-2-1 (27) and will likely contend for a world title soon while Angulo drops to 15-1 (12), experiencing the bitterness of defeat for the first time.

Also on the bill, resurgent light heavy Yusef Mack, 27-2-2 (16), stopped DeAndrey Abron, 15-4 (10), in the fourth frame.
